Winder Housing Authority

At the Housing Authority of the City of Winder, we believe housing is only the starting point. Stable housing creates the foundation for healthier families, stronger neighborhoods, and greater economic opportunity.
Our approach integrates housing, health, education, and workforce development to address the broader challenges many families face. By working closely with community partners, healthcare providers, educational institutions, and nonprofit organizations, WHA helps residents move beyond housing instability toward long-term self-sufficiency.

Housing Stability

WHA provides safe, affordable housing for families, seniors, and individuals throughout Barrow County. Through responsible property management, strategic development partnerships, and preservation initiatives, WHA ensures residents have stable homes that support long-term well-being.

Recent initiatives include the development and support of new affordable housing communities such as Wimberly Manor, Sandpiper Terrace, and The Exchange, along with new homeownership opportunities through the Cottages on Maynard.

Health and Wellness

Recognizing the connection between housing and health, WHA supports programs that improve access to healthy food, nutrition education, and wellness resources.

Through Wimberly’s Roots, WHA operates programs that promote healthier lifestyles and stronger local food systems. The initiative includes a teaching farm, demonstration kitchen, and shared-use commercial kitchen that support community health programming, small food businesses, and local agricultural education.

Programs like the Right Bite Diabetes Cooking School, partnerships with healthcare providers, and nutrition education initiatives help residents and community members take practical steps toward healthier living.

Education and Workforce Development

WHA also supports pathways to economic mobility by connecting residents with educational and job training opportunities. Through the Wimberly Center for Community Development, the Authority hosts workforce training programs, nonprofit service providers, and community organizations that offer resources ranging from adult education to financial counseling.

These collaborations help residents access the tools they need to improve their economic stability and achieve long-term goals.

A Community-Based Model

By bringing together housing, health, and opportunity under one umbrella, WHA has created a model that goes beyond traditional housing programs. The result is a stronger support system for residents and a more resilient community.

The Housing Authority of the City of Winder remains committed to building not only housing, but also the partnerships and programs that help families live healthier, more stable, and more successful lives.
